Journey: 1981-09-05 East Troy, WI (FLAC_SB/FM Master Cassette_2 CD)

I've collected a number of versions of this show through the years.  My first silver CD copy was from the label Wild Street and was titled "Blue Sky Party in Chicago".  Obviously, the label putting that one out didn't realize the show was in Wisconsin and didn't even know all of the song titles as can be seen on the 2 CD set's artwork.

This upload is one of the best copies I have.  There are a few spots where I think the tape it was sourced from changes and may need pitch/speed adjustments made.  But if that's the case or not, it still sounds excellent.  As with a lot of older shows, it was an FM broadcast at some point and time.

This specific upload is from the master cassette used to record it and it was transferred via analog means to CD-R.  This is a great performance with at least one song never heard on any Journey album or even any other live shows circulating out there.  Most likely, this is the one and only time "Too Far Gone" was ever played.  This source has not been EQ'ed or altered in any way.  That may be why is sounds so good (a lot of bad EQ jobs get circulated many times).

Thanks goes out to KRW_Co for doing the master cassette transfer and sharing this show!  I left KRW's original EAC log files in this upload in a folder I created for them.  They provide additional technical/quality related information about his transfer that people (like myself) may be interested in.

This concert, being one from the 1981/82 "Escape" LP tour, has a few interesting items in it.  One such item is the setlist.  It's not the normal 1981/82 Journey setlist played at most shows.  Sure; most of it is.  But songs such as "Do You Recall" and "Lovin' You Is Easy" were not normally played on the "Escape" tour. These songs got left off after 1980's "Departure" LP world tour.  But then there are songs not in this show that Journey later added, such as "Mother, Father" and "Open Arms" that they appear to have not played too.  Just two months later, in their 1981-11-05 and 1981-11-06 Houston, Texas shows, more "Escape" LP songs had already been added to the normal setlist.  So this show is more of a mix of both the pre "Escape" (all Steve Perry era) songs they were known for and the newly released "Escape" songs that made them superstars.

One other thing I like about this Alpine Valley show is the monologue Perry gives between the songs "Too Late" and "Who's Crying Now".  He talks about how he an Jonathan Cain wrote the song one rainy day when they were down and out over lost loves.  As Steve Perry mentions, "...this song is about the one that got away; the one you wish you still had..."  We've all been there before and it takes me back to a specific girl or two from my high school years (and after).  Perry does some awesome improvising and adds a little extra to the beginning of "Who's Crying Now" that I think Journey fans will enjoy.

This is a great recording, one that I may even find a better copy of (and this one is NOT at all bad) around the house.  If one surfaces here or elsewhere, I'll upload it too.

I'll add artwork to this 2 CD set even though it won't be a perfect match necessarily (since this source never had any created for it).  Let me see what I have artwork-wise.  I'll add the "Blue Sky Party in Chicago" artwork if I cannot find anything closer to fit this source.

I hope you enjoy the show...
