Led Zeppelin: 1973-01-22 Southampton, England + Rehearsal Track (FLAC_SB_2 CD)

This is a superb soundboard recording, with an awesome setlist even though "No Quarter" wasn't played, of Zeppelin's 1973 Southampton concert.  The band was getting ready for their US tour and it looks as if they were still fooling around with their setlist trying to get it right for the tour.  While some songs, like "No Quarter", were not played during the European dates prior to the US tour, some songs, like "How Many More Times" were played and then the band stopped playing them on the US tour.  It's a pretty good trade-off looking at some of the songs in the setlist that only got played in the short time before the US tour and then not played again.

This show has superb sound.  However, throughout it there are some sound changes at various times.  I'm of the opinion the person running the soundboard was making these changes as they tried fine tuning the show.  But sometimes you just need to leave things alone when they already sound great.

The show is one of the best performances Led Zeppelin put on during their 1973 tour.  Plant sounds incredible, Page plays some very unique stuff and his guitar is up front sounding through most of the show, and John Bonham and John Paul Jones are spot on as they always were.  This show was very enjoyable as I listened to it earlier on Thursday.  I hadn't heard this concert in a while.  And this Winston Remaster version I think is one of the best sounding versions I have.

I compared this Winston Remaster version to Godfather Records' "Ascension In The Wane" (10 CD set of the January 1973 shows) discs 7 and 8 which are this show.  These two discs are titled "The Black Hole Of Calcutta" in the box set.  "The Black Hole Of Calcutta" may be better sounding?  It's really hard to tell sometimes.  It is more vibrant in amplitude and very clean also.  But the bass mix on the Winston Remaster version, as well as the cleaner audio, puts it neck and neck with Godfather Records version.  They both sound very different and very good.

Another superb version I compared this upload to is the Godfather Records "Southampton University" multi channel mix down version.  Again, it has a very different sound that is also superb but I don't like the low end, bass in it as well.  You have to have a clean bass in order to be able to crank it up without distortion.  And while you can turn this one up and adjust your subwoffer and other audio settings to sound just right, I think the Winston Remaster version beats this version in that you don't have to "fine tune" your audio to get the results you want.

And for one last comparison, I checked it against another Godfather Records version titled "Any Port In A Storm" which also sounds superb.  I still think the Winston Remaster version beat out all of these other versions.  And I did not check it against two other versions I have on CD-R's already because I couldn't locate them fast enough.

Any way you look at it; any version of this show you have is likely to sound superb!  I just enjoy trying to find what I think sounds best and sharing it first.  I can't recall if I've uploaded any versions of this show yet.  But one thing is for sure.  I know this version hasn't been uploaded by me because I just put it to disc today (after having it for a few years) and this was the first time I've heard it all the way through.

If you do not have this show, get it.  It's free as always and you will not be disappointed even though the audio does change a few times throughout the show.  It may be the cleanest January 1973 show that has surfaced.  But that's something I'll have to check later.

I'm uploading the 1973-01-22 rehearsals track (about 6 minutes long) the band did earlier in the day at the Old Refactory too.  The band is messing around in the recording and Plant is primarily singing like Elvis Presley.  Two songs they do (per the uploader's notes) were "Love Me" and "Frankfurt Special".  I added this track to my Winston Remaster CD 2 burn.  It ran over the 80 minute CD burn capacity by about 90 seconds and I allowed my program to overburn (where you can put 90 minutes on an 80 minute disc).  Be sure your program used to burn discs allows this feature before adding it to any burning processes.  Even without adding the track, both CD-R's were almost full with just the show later that evening at Southampton University.  The bonus rehearsal track did have a sector boundary errors (SBE) and I fixed it by padding the file using TLH.  It tested 100% CDDA too.  The text files are in that download's file set.

I hope you enjoy this superb recording and performance as well as a moment captured in music history too...
