Jimmy Page: 1988-10-11 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD Master_2CD)

I could wait two weeks and upload this excellent-to-superb sounding Jimmy Page show from his 1988 Outrider tour on its 27th birthday, but why do that?  Besides, a good friend requested this show so I want to get it uploaded today!

This is definitely one of the better 1988 Outrider tour shows as far as sound and performance goes I believe.  I had forgotten what this show even sounded like because I had not listened to it since I got my first copy in the 1990's in a CD-R trade.  But this copy even beats that one because it is a master copy of the master tapes.

I'm not even sure if the CD-R trade I did for this show back in the 1990's was for this same source?  I'll be able to confirm and I think it is.  There seems to be at least three different sources I discovered while looking around on the web for some artwork.  I believe my 2 CD 1990's trade discs are from this same source as this recording.  But there are some missing tracks and the sound is definitely different.  "Someone To Love" is one track I can say is missing.  It doesn't matter anyhow because this copy of the master is a better sounding copy anyhow (no surprises there).

A huge thank you goes out to the taper Karl Lundmark for this jewel of a recording he taped and shared over the years.

The audio really has a great mix in this recording and it is a stereo recording too.  Jimmy Page's guitar is up front, Jason Bonham's drums are sharp and clear, and John' Miles vocals are right up front too.  Honestly; the whole band can be heard with no problem at all and the mix is perfect.  And the waveform looks perfect too with no audio clipping at all.

There are a few spots where the audio drops down really fast and back up again.  I'm not sure what this is from.  A manual adjustment, a 1980's automatic noise leveler (if they had those on tape decks or DAT machines), I really don't know what caused it.  But it is not a big deal and it doesn't seem to happen a lot from what I've been listening to.  There are also a few micro dropouts that have silent gaps in a few places in the show.  But all of these "issues" pale in  comparison to the whole show and the sound of it.  It is an excellent and even superb show.

It sounds like Jimmy Page's comments as he is talking to the crowd before "Wanna Make Love" are cut partially due to a bad connection going to his microphone or something similar.  He can be heard, but before he starts playing finally, he is cutting in and out and you can hear an audio noise.  Since he never got to introduce the next song as he was trying to do, one of the other band members yells out "Wanna Make Sweet Love" as the song begins.  After the song is over, Page comes back and say's "Hello..." as if he's checking to make sure the microphone is working now before he tried to introduce the band.

Jimmy Page seems to really be in fine form on this night.  More so than even a lot of the other great nights on the tour.  The clarity and fidelity of his guitar may just play a part in this too because he can be heard so well.  But as I listened to "Stairway To Heaven" (the last track) first before beginning this upload this morning, I was thinking he had a lot more of the Led Zeppelin feeling and notes going into this performance of the song.  And this whole show really sounds like it has that Zeppelin style to it.  It's not that other shows don't also have this sound or style on certain nights, some more than others, but this night and the fidelity of the recording make it really shine and it's enjoyable listening!

One of the best sounding songs to me in this show is "Emerald Eyes".  As Page starts into his solo the mix is perfect with the bass, drums, and his guitar.  It really sounds beautiful and nostalgic in a way to me.  It takes me back to 1988 and that time in my life.  I always liked that song on the Outrider CD back in those days and it sounds even better today (and live).  Another nice addition in the concert is the way Page plays a little  "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" in part of the song "Midnight Moonlight" and a lot of "Dazed and Confused" in the guitar solo track..

I hope you enjoy the show...
