Led Zeppelin: 1973-07-17 Seattle, WA (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen & SB Low Gen Matrix & AUD 4th Gen_3 CD)

It's been a month since I've been able to make any posts.  Due some medical issues and a Christmas time stay at the hospital, I had to take a break from making any posts or even keeping up with new material being shared or circulating.  While things are still ongoing, and hopefully nothing more than a doctor visit and catching up will be involved, I hope to be back uploading new old material again now.  The uploads may be a little sporadic at first but should fall into a regular pattern soon.

This is an excellent show I never have uploaded anything from yet and it's another great job by Winston Remasters.  This show has been one that a good friend requested a while back so I decided to start back my uploading with this requested show first.

I have compared this copy I am uploading with a few other mixes of other soundboard and audience recordings of this show and I truly believe this is by far the best sounding copy of this show.  It is also the second longest copy with the EVSD label copy coming in at two minutes longer.  However, this blows the EVSD mix out of the water and this is a matrix too.

From the way Winston Remasters wrote about this project, and I could be wrong, it sounds like he used the first generation audience recording as the primary audio file and used the soundboard as the secondary source in the matrix of the first two discs.  I may be wrong too (see Winston Remasters Notes below) since he indicates "80/20" and then "SB/AUD" too.  The third and final disc is the second audio source used on its own (no matrix).  Winston Remasters did note this was his first matrix project too.

LINEAGE:
(1a) Disc 1 & 2 Matrix Sources: AUD - external microphone >Tandberg mono reel-to-reel @ 7 1/2 jps-reel master > VHS (1) > matrix remaster & (1b) SB - unconfirmed low gen very clean analog >DAT1> matrix remaster
(2) CD 3 AUD Source: cassette (4) > DAT (2) > PCM > remaster

(3) me > TLH > WAV (to test for lossiness & align sector boundaries) > Audacity (to view waveform, embed metadata/track titles & info, and then to re-encode) > FLAC 8 > TLH (to check for SBE's and create and verify new ffp & md5 files) > you

Winston Remasters Notes (copy & paste):
"First Zep Matrix I attempted. Thanks to Gungywump for the idea ;)
Matrix -  80/20 SBD/AUD  mixed with Samplitude.
Best way to describe the sound - AUD source gave the SBD natural reverb and added Harmonics.
Only cut that remains is between Moby Dick -  Heartbreaker. no plantations..  ALL SONGS ARE COMPLETE.
Dynamics & EQ applied for balance.
"

Bootradr Notes:
I mention above I fixed SBE's (aligned sector boundaries) in this recording.  This was not an error or oversight on Winston Remasters part either.  The last track of each disc had an SBE which really does no damage since it is the last track on each disc.  However, I like to remove the SBE's anyhow.  If someone was to burn the show not following the setlist order below and make another track the final track on any disc then the SBE "could" cause a digital error.  It's not likely this would happen and the tracks might not even fit on discs any other way (I didn't check because I wanted to fix the SBE's anyhow).  This is a real common practice among many people (not worrying about the final track with an SBE) since it doesn't create issues when burned to disc in the same setlist order.  I'm just a stickler for getting rid of the SBE's anyhow.  Again, the way Winston Remasters did it was NOT an oversight or error!

I really like the sound Winston Remasters got out of this show when he finished his work on it.  It is so much cleaner sounding, likely a lower generation copy than the label sources, and it is smooth and clean on both the soundboard and audience sources used.

I'm a little surprised I haven't uploaded this one in the past.  But the good news is there are a lot more like this one, ones that are really awesome sounding and I just haven't gotten to them yet.  So this means there are still plenty of shows/dates I just haven't made it to yet that are left to keep uploading new (old) Led Zeppelin concerts of to this site for a very long time!

The waveform looks perfect in this recording with no audio clipping.  The final CD, disc 3, is all excellent audience audio also.  Like many of the 1973 Led Zeppelin soundboard shows, there is no soundboard audio currently circulating or available for the last disc of the show.  I've often wondered why this is the case on so many 1973 shows.  Were the tapes for the shows not all available, did the label(s) keep them in hope of future releases, who really knows?  But we are fortunate to have an excellent first generation copy to make this a complete show and finish out the concert with a disc three.

I've only sampled parts of the show tonight and it has been at least two years since I have sat down and listened to the whole concert.  But memory and sampling tells me this is an excellent-to-superb sounding recording and it is one any Led Zeppelin fan will likely enjoy.

I'm skipping a more detailed review of the show other than what I've noted already since I want to get this concert uploaded before I go to bed and I remember how great this one sounds.  You be the judge.  And please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the show and recording once you listen.  Feel free to post your review if you'd like in the comments area.

NOTE:  I recommend unzipping the WinRAR zipped files into a short named folder/path name.  Otherwise, if you encounter an error when unzipping the zipped files (and I'm not saying you will), just rename the two zipped files (or the folder you put them in) with a shorter name if you encounter a message or error mentioning anything regarding the path containing more than 260 characters.  I'm not saying this will happen!  But it if it does rename your folder or the zipped files (even just until you unzip them) and you will have no issues.  Every so often a longer name is needed when I describe the contents like I do.  It is a very simple issue to fix if this ever does occur.

I hope you enjoy the show...
